Generative engine optimization for ecommerce

What gets a store into AI answers? GEO, AEO and "AI search optimization" are three names for the same job: making your store easy for AI assistants to find, read and recommend. Most of it is good SEO and clean product data. Here's what the platforms actually say, what to fix in code and what not to pay for.

The short answer

There's no secret AI ranking factor. Google says there are "no additional requirements" to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet, and its 2026 guide calls optimizing for AI search "still SEO".

What changes for a store is where the information comes from. AI assistants read your pages, but they also pull your product data from feeds and catalogs, and more and more they send agents that use your site the way a person would. So GEO for ecommerce comes down to three things: pages a machine can read, product data that answers questions and a site an agent can operate. See the checklist.

How an AI assistant reads a store

When a shopper asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot for a product, the answer is built from three sources:

How an AI assistant builds a shopping answer
  1. Search index: reads your pages (Your pages: text, schema).
  2. Product catalog: reads product feeds (Product data: titles, variants).
  3. Agents: use your site (Your interface: accessibility tree).

Each source reads a different part of the store. If one breaks, the assistant answers with less data or recommends someone else.

  • Search indexes. The assistant searches the web (Google's index, Bing's, or its own crawler such as OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot) and reads the pages it finds.
  • Product catalogs. Structured data sent by your platform: Shopify Catalog feeds ChatGPT, Copilot and Google's AI surfaces, and Merchant Center feeds Google's Shopping Graph.
  • Agents. Software that opens your site and clicks through it. Google notes that browser agents read screenshots, the page structure and the accessibility tree, and Microsoft's Playwright MCP works from the accessibility tree instead of pixels.

The accessibility tree is the same structure screen readers use. If a button has no name for a screen reader, it has no name for an agent either.

What Google, OpenAI and Microsoft actually say

  • Google Search Central

There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.

No special schema and no need to split content into small chunks. Merchant Center and Business Profile help products show up in AI answers.

    Read Google's guidance
  • Google-Extended

Google-Extended does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search nor is it used as a ranking signal in Google Search.

It controls whether Gemini can use your content for training and grounding. To stay out of AI Overviews you would use nosnippet or noindex, not this.

    Google's crawler docs
  • OpenAI

OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features.

GPTBot is the training crawler, and blocking it does not remove you from ChatGPT search. Product results are not ads: merchants rank on availability, price, quality and whether they are the maker or main seller.

    OpenAI's crawler docs
  • Microsoft

    Traditional SEO fundamentals still matter.

It also warns against hiding key answers in tabs or expandable menus. Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report, in preview, that counts your citations in Copilot.

    Microsoft's guidance

The platforms don't agree on every detail (Microsoft favors content in smaller pieces, Google says it isn't needed), but they agree on the base: crawlable, indexable, clear pages.

The checklist in code

Tick what your store already does.

0 of 8 ticked.

Product data that answers questions

Shoppers ask assistants full questions, like "waterproof hiking boots under $150 that run wide". The assistant can only match what your data says. Shopify sends AI channels each product's "title, description, options, images, price, availability, and other key attributes", and Google's Merchant Center advice for AI Mode is the same: put real search terms in titles and descriptions and fill in missing attributes.

A listing that answers the question (example product)
  1. 1The title says what it is and what matters: waterproof, wide fit.
  2. 2Variants are real options (size and width), not separate products.
  3. 3Attributes are filled in: material, waterproofing, weight.
  4. 4Shipping and returns are on the page, not in a chat widget.
  5. 5Reviews are in text, on the same page.

Waterproof, under $150, wide: every part of the shopper's question from the diagram is in the data.

On Shopify, Catalog Mapping can take the title, description and category from metafields, so data you already keep can feed AI channels.

llms.txt: what it is and what it isn't

llms.txt is a Markdown file at your site's root that summarizes the site for language models: an H1 with the name, a short summary and lists of links to key pages (llmstxt.org).

Shopify Agentic Storefronts and buying inside AI

Agentic Storefronts makes Shopify products discoverable in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta's AI, using Shopify Catalog. It's "active by default for eligible stores", with no plan restriction, and so is direct checkout on the channels that offer it.

Agentic Storefronts channels and where the purchase happens
  • ChatGPT

    Your own checkout

Stores that sell to US customers, based anywhere.

  • Microsoft Copilot

    Inside Copilot (on by default)

Stores that sell to US customers.

  • Google AI Mode and Gemini

    Inside Google (on by default)

US-based stores with Merchant Center. Still rolling out.

  • Meta AI and Muse

    Inside Meta (on by default)

Stores that sell to customers in the US, Canada or Mexico.

Sends the shopper to your store Takes payment inside the AI (direct checkout, on by default)

All channels also need your terms, privacy and refund policies filled in. You manage each channel, and turn direct checkout on or off, in Sales channels > Agentic in your Shopify admin.

  • ChatGPT is discovery only: shoppers find the product in ChatGPT and finish on your checkout, and orders arrive in your admin with ChatGPT referral attribution.
  • Direct checkout is on by default, with limits: Google Analytics and custom pixels don't fire there (only server-to-server events do), and subscriptions, bundles, customizable products, local delivery and in-store pickup aren't supported.
  • WooCommerce: agentic checkout and the new commerce protocols are announced as "coming soon". Today, syncing your catalog to Merchant Center with Google for WooCommerce is the main path into Google's AI shopping.

How to measure AI traffic

Since May 2026, GA4 has a default AI Assistant channel for visits from sources like ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot. Not everything lands there:

Where each kind of AI traffic shows up
  • A visitor arrives from ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot

    GA4 · AI Assistant channel

  • A visitor arrives from Google's AI Overviews or AI Mode

    GA4 · Organic Search

  • Someone buys in an AI's direct checkout

Shopify · orders report (not in GA4)

Purchases made inside an AI's direct checkout skip your pixels, so they only show up in Shopify, under the sales channel and referral of each order.

In Bing Webmaster Tools, the AI Performance report shows how often Copilot cites your pages.

What not to pay for

Most of what's sold as "AI optimization" is either standard SEO with a new name or something no one can promise.

Not worth paying for

  • Guaranteed citations or "AI rankings"

No one controls what an assistant answers.

  • Special "AI schema" or content chunking

Google says neither is required for its AI features.

  • llms.txt as a growth plan

It's housekeeping that takes an hour, not a strategy.

  • Overlay widgets sold as "agent-ready"

Agents read your real markup, not a layer on top of it.

What moves the needle

  • Pages a machine can read

Server-rendered text, accurate structured data, crawlers allowed.

  • Complete product data

Clear titles, real variants, filled-in attributes, answers on the page.

  • An accessible, fast store

Named buttons and fields, good Core Web Vitals: what screen readers and agents both need.

  • Measurement

AI traffic and AI-channel orders tracked, so you know what works.

Case · codebullsteam.com

We ran this checklist on our own site
What we measuredBefore→After
Pages where the contact email was hidden from agents 14 0
Client logos read twice by screen readers and agents 20 0
Lighthouse Accessibility (home, CRO, contact) 100 100
Lighthouse Agentic Browsing 2/3 3/3

An automatic Cloudflare setting was hiding our email from anything that doesn't run JavaScript, and our logo carousel was read twice. Both were fixed in code. Measured October 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between GEO, AEO and SEO?

GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization) are newer names for optimizing to appear in AI answers. Google treats it as part of SEO: the same crawling, indexing and quality basics.

Do I need special structured data for AI?

No. Google says there's no special schema for its AI features. Keep your Product and Offer markup accurate and matching the page.

Should I block GPTBot?

That's a decision about AI training. Blocking GPTBot doesn't remove you from ChatGPT search, which uses OAI-SearchBot.

Does llms.txt help me rank in ChatGPT or Google?

There's no evidence it does. Google says it neither helps nor harms. It's cheap and useful for agents, so we add one.

Can shoppers buy my products inside ChatGPT?

For Shopify stores, ChatGPT sends shoppers to your own checkout. Paying inside the AI is available on Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta for eligible stores.

How do I know if AI sends me sales?

Use GA4's AI Assistant channel for visits and your Shopify orders report for purchases made through AI channels.
